According to Asian Corporate Governance Association’s Asian proxy Voting Survey 2006, India was ranked 4th out of 11 countries in voting system and has been judged as the one with ‘antiquated voting system’. Though the evolution of capital markets has been slow in India, but it’s steady. Exposure of Indian companies to global markets has resulted in giving a major push to corporate governance standards and transparency levels. Compulsory filing of financial statements form a part of mandatory requirements of stock market regulations in all the countries. And the results are instant; though it’s true that transparency in real estate sector in India is still low, but facts indicate that things are improving. This year, even experimentation seems to be an understatement. Stupendously successful sequels like Lage Raho Munnabhai and Krrish (yes, our very own genuine superhero!) dominated the mind screens; and a high voltage action packed Dhoom 2 is to follow, though it remains to be seen how the producers would be able to pull back ‘any’ audiences into the movie halls just to see “stylish action,” a trademark of the first movie. Well, perhaps our audiences really are “no-brainers!” Why, isn’t that the promiscuous logic that permeates a plethora of the movie fraternity flitting around Bollywood, right from the Dons & KANKs to the Fanaas & Phir Hera Pheris, all ostensibly successful movies? For the answer, we suggest you scamper around to the movie house that produced Naksha (yes, it came, it saw, and it really ran like crazy...away!), or holler across to the man who created a new definition of a super-flop (Farhan Akhtar, who invested such an exorbitantly huge amount for Lakshya, that losses were ensured even though collections were decent; and yes, he’s the one making Don!), or bark a question across to trade pundits on why is it that many big budget multi-starring film producers fanatically focus on just the first couple of weeks’ collections... Aren’t they confident of their movies sustainability quotient? Aren’t they confident audiences are really no brainers? Ahem, we still haven’t rested our case, have we...

And, a few years ago, the feisty entrepreneur and promoter of CNN, Ted Turner, stunned the world by giving away almost one billion dollars – virtually his entire fortune – to charity. Recent events have made even that gesture pale in comparison. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have together committed more than $50 billion of their wealth to fight poverty, disease and illiteracy in the third world. Google has gone one step ahead. It has started a charity with a $1 billion corpus that will operate like a corporation – earning profits even as it tackles some of the ills that plague the world. You can be sure that these huge funds won’t disappear into the pockets of corrupt third world politicians and bureaucrats but actually make a difference. Clearly, profits can do a lot of good. Netting in more users

Guess how many Internet users there are in India? According to a study, conducted jointly by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International, the number this September stands at 37 million. In March this year, it used to be 33 million – so in just six months, there’s been an addition of 4 million into the Internet family! The number of active users (users who have used the Net at least once in the last 30 days), during the same period, has moved up to 25 million in September from 21.1 million in March. The study further estimates that the Internet user base may cross the 40 million mark by March next year. The youth – college students and those below the age of 35 – are the main drivers of Internet usage in India. Smaller towns, too, were contributing towards the growth of Internet penetration: these account for 25 % of all net users and usage is growing at 142 % year on year. The next round of growth, it is felt, will be driven by new and innovative applications such as blogs, P2P, video on demand and online gaming while the old favourites such as email, chat and IM will drive first time users to the medium.

On the other hand, ADAG’s financial arm, Reliance Capital, is yet to gain altitude. Its insurance business is still in its infancy (it will be another year, or even two, before it can actually be considered a major in its sector). Then there is the shopper Anil, ready to dip his fingers into the retail pie. While on one hand Reliance Communications Limited already has a considerable retail presence through its chain of 241 ‘Reliance World’ outlets scattered across 105 cities, the other signs of the retail foray are evident with his financial arm – Reliance Capital – investing in Giny & Jony and Vishal Retail Stores. The company is also currently exploring options of tying up with Starbucks, the global coffee giant. Considering that ADAG has invested a total of Rs.2,300 crores by way of equity in Reliance Capital (by far the single largest investment by any professional entrepreneur in the country), the results are not going to be visible any time soon in the already overcrowded and dynamic Indian financial sector. But as Anil Ambani says: “The investment is a reflection of my personal conviction in the vast potential of the financial services sector, and the long term growth prospects of Reliance Capital”

The new FM radio channels will have to differentiate on content

The celebrations are long over and the champagnes have been poured. 91 cities across India; 338 new FM Radio frequencies and 85 bidders (many triumphs and few defeats), this has been a watershed year for the radio sector! From the basic radio to private FM channels to visual radio to World space satellite radio, the Indian listener is now truly spoilt for choice. However, now that the euphoria of the Phase II is behind us, it’s time for real action. Out of the 243 frequencies formally allocated, 10 have already started beaming. Existing players like Radio Mirchi and Radio City have been joined by few others like Rajasthan Patrika and Clear Media (of Win FM fame in Mumbai, also quite popular in Delhi now as 95 FM) in taking the first mover advantage. Most other operators are in the process of launch, setting up infrastructure and devising their optimum strategies. According to estimates of a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report, the industry, which today stands at Rs.3 billion is expected to grow by four times and reach Rs.12 billion by 2010. According to the latest National Readership Survey (NRS) figures, the number of individuals listening to FM in an average week has grown from 76 million in 2005 to as many as 119 million in 2006, a jump of nearly 55%.

Bikram Yoga... {IIPM B&E Article}

...in heat, or just plain beat?

An art, about 50 centuries old, the gateway to eternal bliss and ultimate spiritual enlightenment… the soultwisting, spirit churning objet d’art called Yoga – moulding the interior monologue of the soul for that ethereal and incorporeal tranquility. What’s so new about it, you ask? Nothing much… just that this ancient discipline is itself stuck in a tug of war! One between an organisation of yoga-studio proprietors and instructors called the Open Source Yoga Unity (OSYU), and the acclaimed yoga guru, Bikram Choudhary, whose decision to enforce exclusive rights on a series of pranayamas and asanas has upset the yogis across the world! Yoga (in essence, the union of the mind with the body, and of the spirit with The Spirit) has traditionally meant the attainment of spiritual luminance by the practice of certain moral and ethical principals coupled with physical exercises. It’s now evolved into a variety of derivative philosophies and practices that work the body and the mind through isometric postures (asana) and breathing excercises (pranayama) and achieving intellectual tranquility by relaxing the mind through meditation. A branch within that system is called Hatha Yoga, which was propounded by Yogi Swatmarama and is now being carried forward by many, including Bikram Choudhary. Since the early 1970s, this proponent has opened numerous yoga schools and certified instructors from his college now number in hundreds. Though this yogi’s belligerent claims for the reservation of copyrights and trademark for his “sequence of 26 asanas (sic!)” has earned as much condemnation as praise, his conspicuous style of ‘yoga done in a hot room’ (105 degree Fahrenheit) or more generically called the ‘hot yoga’ still remains high-flying. Along with the innumerable disciples-in-waiting still knocking at his door, there stand equal number of lawsuit holders against him who do not seem to have liked the idea of this cultural legacy struggling with ownership issues. So, as this fight over the controversial Intellectual Property Rights on Bikram Yoga continues, let’s get down to all other exercises and games we know of, lest all of them get patented one day! Make hay while Mr. Choudhary does some bit of his ‘own’ work out – ‘sidestepping’ conscience, ‘running’ down to the court and ‘pushing’ his luck hard!

IIPM Editorial : 'Curse of Pharaohs’

But celebrations gave way to mourning a few months later in 1923, when the much-heard-of, though lessseen-legend of the ‘curse of pharaohs’ followed, when majority of those who spectacled the royal king’s unwrapping fell to death one by one. And the first to fall was the man behind funding the excavation, Lord Carnarvon, who unknowingly shaved a mosquito bite off his face causing blood poisoning and pneumonia leading to immediate death. Many call it a bad omen setting in for violating the grave of the pharaoh, where hieroglyphics had warned – “Death shall come on swift wings to him who disturbs the peace of the King”. But pragmatists impute it to immune systems that gave in to the pathogens (Staphylococcus and histoplasmosis) present in the tomb. Carnarvon was known for frail health but George Jay Gould wasn’t.

BP caught smoking in Texas (IIPM Publication)

An oil refinery of British Petroleum has been rated as the worst polluting plant in the United States. The Environmental Protection Agency, which conducted the survey, found that the refinery released three times more pollution in 2004 than it did in 2003. The increase accounted for the bulk of a 15% increase in refinery emissions nationwide in 2004, which is the highest since 2000. There could be federal fines levied against the energy giant if it is found that the company has been underreporting toxic emissions.

Ethiopia-Eritrea Boundary Commissions (EEBC)

The reason for current stalemate after the UN mediated ceasefire in 2000, is Ethiopia’s refusal to comply with the final rulings of Ethiopia-Eritrea Boundary Commissions (EEBC). The Boundary Commission was set up in the year 2000, to demarcate the 1000 km long border between these two countries. In its final ruling, the Boundary Commission had awarded the border town of Badme to Eritrea. Birds Migration

Every autumn, as the birds migrate through central Asia, the Bedouins would capture and, within two weeks, train the falcons, preferring the Peregrine and Saker breeds, for hunting the bustards and hares. And as the falcon flew, the tribal sheiks traversed along, reconnecting with communities, which otherwise were out of reach. Modern man’s machines, employed for hunting, are used and then gather dust lying in the closet until the next hunting season; but falconry doesn’t allow for indulgence in such negligent bliss. Preparing these birds, endowed with formidable claws and dagger-like beaks, the sport entails enormous skill, patience and dollops of courage on the part of the falconer.
